23 July 2014 ... 13 September 2014 | Art Zone 42 > Center of Athens

Blanka Amezkua, solo exhibition Figuras del Alma Figures of the Soul

On Wednesday, July 23, at 8:00 pm, Art Zone 42 gallery presents Blanka Amezkua’s solo exhibition "Figuras del Alma" (Figures of the Soul).

The artist, born in Mexico, lives and works in Athens these past four years. In the new series of works that the artist presents, she skillfully combines modern art with tradition. In this project she collaborated with traditional artists and artisans from three different Mexican states (Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacán), all famous of their important culture and history.

Projecting as a model a typical form-the figure of her body, her partners painted works with traditional materials, which were used from generation to generation for many years, even during the pre-Columbian period.

As the artist herself says: 'Through my collaboration with these artists-artisans, I realized the importance of traditional art and folklore, not only in Mexico, but in general. With the inherited knowledge from their ancestors, these people have been creating with the same materials as used by grandparents and great-grandparents, repeating the same pictures or recounting the same story, like an eternal chain. Their skills and ethos taught me that, despite the difficult situations and predicaments governing the city of Mexico, these progenitor hands continue to exist and create, reminding us that another world is possible'.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday, July 23 to Friday, August 1, 2014 and from September 4 to 13.
